The hospital room was unnervingly quiet.
Lu Yanbei and Su He gazed at each other silently, neither breaking the silence first.
Su He didn't know how to comfort him, while Lu Yanbei felt guilt towards her. Everything had been under his control, everything had been going smoothly, yet at the last moment, something went wrong, and he had almost lost her. How could Lu Yanbei not blame himself! He had been too arrogant!
Heaven knew how fast his heart had pounded when he learned Su He had been stuffed into a refrigerated truck. He had felt like he was going mad! Just like back then, when he couldn't find Su He anywhere, he had been driven to madness! At that time, he could only hurt himself to lessen the pain. From then until now, he had been desperately holding back, his fingernails piercing his palms. He was afraid that if he lost control of his emotions, he would do something he would regret, and he was also afraid... of scaring the woman he loved.
"It's alright now..." Su He forced a smile and held his trembling hand. She knew this was a sign of his illness flaring up. She didn't want him to torment himself for her.
"Honey, hold me, I'm so cold..." Su He opened her arms to him, whining pitifully. It had to be said, this tactic worked wonders. Lu Yanbei truly leaned down and pulled Su He into his embrace. Su He's evening gown was already in tatters from the ordeal, beyond repair. After being taken to the emergency room, the doctor found a nurse to change her into clean hospital clothes.
"Honey, I want to take a hot bath, I stink!" After the first step was successful, Su He made another request. She had consulted with Lu Yanbei's psychologist, Xiao Xun, before. The best way to help him overcome his psychological barriers was to distract him. Su He's requests for hugs and baths were all attempts to divert his attention.
"I'll draw the bath for you," Lu Yanbei said and walked into the bathroom. Not long after, he came back to carry Su He in. Lying in the bathtub, Su He sighed contentedly. "Ah, it would be even better with some red wine."
"You just finished your IV drip. You can't drink alcohol for the next week," Lu Yanbei explained patiently while washing her hair. Su He gave a regretful "Oh." "Then a cup of milk tea isn't too much to ask, is it?"
"What flavor would you like? I'll have someone buy it for you later," Lu Yanbei said, looking at her dotingly. "Taro mud and mango sago with salted egg yolk." Su He smiled and named a flavor. Lu Yanbei blinked, seemingly not understanding. Su He had to repeat herself. "You don't understand? I'll send it to your phone later."
Speaking of phones, Su He suddenly realized she hadn't seen hers in a long time. "It should be with the bridesmaid," Lu Yanbei replied to her question after rinsing the foam from her hair with clear water. After showering, Su He smelled fragrant again.
"Kiss me!" Su He had wanted to do this earlier, but she had smelled too strongly. Now that she was fragrant all over, she had no reservations.
"Stop messing around!" Lu Yanbei caught her restless hands. "Hmph, I want to!" Su He said, and then actively leaned in to kiss him.
"Su Su, are you done? I'm going down to get some food, you see..." Just as Su He's lips touched his, Su Ying pushed the door open, interrupting their intimate moment.
"Ah, sorry, you guys continue!" Su Ying, having stumbled upon the ambiguous scene, coughed lightly and turned to leave. Su He's face instantly turned red. Getting caught doing something naughty was truly embarrassing! Lu Yanbei suddenly chuckled, "I was about to say it's inconvenient right now..."
"It really is quite inconvenient!" Su He muttered. Too many third wheels! However, after this incident, Su He gave up the idea and obediently lay back on the hospital bed. Lu Yanbei stroked her head and went to the restroom.
Seeing that Su He was in good spirits, the people in the hallway came in to visit. Jiang Xiaoxiao was the last to enter, returning Su He's phone. "Miaomiao, it's my fault for being too careless..." She shouldn't have let her guard down.
"What does this have to do with you! You were trying to help me get my necklace back." Speaking of the jewelry, Su He couldn't help but exclaim, "The password was changed, but my things aren't lost, are they?"
"Don't worry, we found it all!" Su Ying replied. "Those people's goal was to stall for time, they didn't touch anything inside."
"That's truly... a shame!" Su He clicked her tongue twice. If those thieves knew the jewelry in the safe was worth millions, they probably wouldn't have bothered with her. Taking the jewelry and leaving, without a trace, wouldn't that have been better?
"You truly are lucky to be foolish!" Su Ying's thoughts were similar. She really didn't know if the thief was stupid or ignorant of its value.
Su He rubbed the spot where she had poked her. "Sister, I'm a patient, can't you go easy on me?"
"I was already holding back! Ask Su Lin how it felt when I twisted his ear just now?" Su He's gaze immediately shifted to Su Lin. Su Lin instinctively covered his ears. "Big sister, you're such a tomboy, I'm really afraid you won't get married!"
"Whether I get married or not has nothing to do with you! Besides, who says women have to get married?" Su Ying raised her hand, preparing to give him another pinch. Su Lin flinched and retreated a few steps, hiding behind Su Chen. "Big brother, aren't you going to do something?"
"Stop messing around, all of you." As the eldest among the four, Su Chen still had some authority. As soon as he spoke, Su Ying and Su Lin immediately quieted down.
Watching their interaction, Jiang Xiaoxiao couldn't help but feel envious. She was the eldest in her family, with a younger brother and sister. But due to her parents' favoritism, the relationship among the siblings wasn't very harmonious. They were accustomed to her giving, and had long taken her concessions for granted. In recent years, she hadn't been home much, and they hadn't contacted her, their feelings growing increasingly distant. Although they maintained superficial politeness, they were no better than strangers.
Su He's siblings argued and bickered, but it was all in good fun, not genuine conflict. When they needed to be united, they all pulled together. Despite having no blood relation, they were closer than if they were siblings.
Su He sensed her desolation and squeezed her hand. "There weren't many children present today, so there should be quite a few red envelopes left, right?" Jiang Xiaoxiao nodded. "Only ten were given out." Su He was instantly delighted. "So, I've saved a year's worth of milk tea money again? Hahaha..."
Seeing her greedy demeanor, everyone found it both amusing and exasperating. She had almost lost her life, yet she could still laugh! Should they call it a good mindset, or simple-mindedness? But this was for the best! At least, she wouldn't be left with any psychological trauma.
