Chapter 428: Chapter 428: Not a Single Thing Missing
After speaking, James Grant turned to leave.
Feeling the deliberate distance from James, Evelyn Clayton’s heart was conflicted.
She whispered, "I understand, thank you for today..."
James’s Adam’s apple moved slightly, but in the end, he said nothing more and exited the room.
The room was empty again, Evelyn took a bathrobe from the hotel and went into the shower.
The warm water sprayed on her skin, relieving some of the tension and fatigue. Twenty minutes later, Evelyn emerged from the shower wrapped in clothes and saw a bag on the bed.
There was no one else in the room. Evelyn hesitated for a moment before going to the bedside to pick up the bag.
Opening it, she found outdoor clothes and intimate garments inside.
Evelyn didn’t know what she felt, standing there in a daze for a long time.
This night was destined to be sleepless.
Evelyn almost counted the time until dawn, and indeed it wasn’t long before the sky turned light.
At dawn, someone knocked on her room door.
Feeling inexplicably tense, Evelyn walked to the door to open it, ready to speak the words she had prepared—
It was a hotel staff member who had come.
The hotel staff stood with Evelyn’s luggage beside him, holding a phone encased in a plastic bag, and handed them to Evelyn when he saw her.
"Miss Clayton, this is from Mr. Grant. He said it was delivered by the police an hour ago, and since you might not be awake, he asked me to pass it on to you."
Evelyn was momentarily stunned and instinctively asked, "Where is he?"
"You mean Mr. Grant? He’s already checked out," the staff handed everything over to Evelyn, "Please check if anything is missing."
It took Evelyn a while to regain her senses and murmur, "Nothing is missing, not a single item."
The staff smiled, "Good, then I’ll leave you to rest."
After the hotel staff left, Evelyn stood at the doorway for a long time before dragging her luggage back into the room.
She turned on her phone, and the battery was at 100%, clearly someone had charged it for her. On the screen, aside from a concerned message from Yara Reagan sent last night, there were also greetings from Violet Ford and Franklin Ford, but nothing else.
Evelyn calmed her chaotic thoughts, replied with an ’All good’ to Violet and Franklin, then called Yara back.
"Why didn’t you answer your phone last night? I was about to call the police!" Yara’s voice was still laced with leftover panic.
Evelyn pinched her brow, speaking slowly, "I, I fell asleep after changing places last night. Didn’t feel too well."
Yara sighed in relief, "By the way, how’s John Jacobs’s situation?"
Evelyn opened her mouth to answer when another call came through on her phone.
For some reason, Evelyn felt a momentary lift of excitement.
Upon seeing that the call was from the Y Province police station area code, her eyebrows twitched lightly.
"I’ll tell you later, the police station is contacting me," Evelyn gave a simple excuse to Yara, ended the call, and returned the call to the police station.
"Is this Miss Clayton? Good news, John Jacobs has been apprehended. You can come to the station with the relevant documents to handle your personal matters. If you wish to press charges against John Jacobs, you can also bring a lawyer with you."
The efficiency of the police was high, and the matter was explained simply and clearly before the call was swiftly ended.
Evelyn, however, sat stunned on the bed for a long time.
She didn’t know what was wrong with herself; perhaps it was the lingering fear that made her resistant and unwilling to go to the police station.
But she had come this time to handle this matter; it was impossible not to go.
Half-heartedly contemplating, Evelyn’s fingers uncontrollably opened her contacts, staring at the name ’James Grant’ for a long while before mustering the courage to press it.
"Sorry, the number you have dialed cannot be reached at this moment..."
